This is the contact sheet for the series of photographs based around the MRC, I wanted the building to be  further towards the right to get more sky in the image. I chose IMG_2650 as I think it is the best suited for its role in the poster, and frames the area well.
I can not find the original un-edited image or the edited image without the frame.

This is the final edited image that has had the frame added to it,  I really like how this image has turned out. The effects I used to achieve this finish to the sky was the curves adjustment. It was purely by accident I managed to get this effect though, it was mainly achieved by darkening the light colours and brightening the darker colours, this did create a whacky effect around the trees.

Dan Boulton

           Dan Boulton was born in 1973 Enfield in North London. His style of photography is a cross            

           between street photography and documentory. His work has been featured in magazines and 

           also has been on show in galleries.

           He has also worked on 2 books that are based around his Southbank work.

           

           

           His visual style is grimy and dark and around skateboarding in general. His images are all

           slightly out of focus

           

This image is is called Sounthbank 53 its not black and white

           
           The image shows his or someone else's shadow the image is also out of focus. This is most
           likely a choice that Dan made as it gives the image have character

         

The image is called Southbank 16

           This image is out of focus or its motion blur. the image depicts a person presumable is  a skater

           whom is posing next to a wall of graffiti. This could be to show the how the youth do not think 

           highly of the rulers/ law.

                                   

The image is called Southbank 8           

           This image is depicting what looks like a grimy floor with crushed cans on the floor. this could
           to represent the soiety that we live in, with everything being dark and gloomy with out much
           to rely on.

My intention for this series of photographs is for them to be on the DVD cover and the poster as the photograph. The framing and lighting used was to match the other images being used on the poster and DVD cover, I also wanted a 1 colour background to make editing the image easier for the poster and DVD cover.

ORIGINAL PICTURE

I chose to use this image as it had the best contrast between the background and the character. The image also had the character, the non actavist, in a pose that made them look as if they didnt care about what went on around them.

ADJUSTED IMAGE

This is the image after it was edited i used pretty much the same filters on this as i did on the other images. So i used the vibrance and altered the RGB to darken the lighter colours slightly. I also croppd the image closer to the actor.

FRAMED IMAGE

This is the final framed image i think it is a success and it does have a high quality resolution wise and it is pretty good on the lighting front.

Chosen photographer

I have chosen to write about Robert Capa.

Robert was born in 1913 to the name, Endre Friedmann, moved away from his home country of Hungary at the age of 18. He adopted the name Robert Capa to hide his Jewish name as it was difficult for Jewish freelance photographers to get hired in Germany at the time.

He was a revolution for journalism when it came to  war photography as he showed it how it was on the front lines.

FALLING SOLIDER
This photograph shows how devastating war can be by showing the soldier in the image being shot and this would have been ground breaking at the time. The image portrays the emotion of sadness.

 D-DAY
This image is depicting the d-day landing as the soldiers hide behind tank traps to defend themselves from machine gun fire and mortar fire. This image is trying to portray the fear that the soldiers would have felt on the battle field.

German farmers fleeing from burning house
This image is as the title says about a  family of German farmers leaving their house as it burns behind them, It really does show how it was everyone who got affected by the bombing raids during WWII both British and German.

Henri cartier bresson

>Short biography

Hernri Cartier-Bresson  was born in 1908 and trained as a painter and began his career in photography in 1938. He was one of the first photographers to start using 35mm format with a leica camera and he helped to define and improve the evolution of the photo-journalistic "street photography" style, the style has influenced many photographers.

His visual style is different in each image but it is clear that his images are all impromptu and spare of the moment taken with brilliant timing.

FRANCE. Paris. Place de l'Europe. Gare 
This photograph depicts a man jumping over a puddle with a perfect reflection. This photograph would have been impossible to set up and get that perfect timing and  the almost immaculate reflection. The image if planned could be trying to show the emotions of joy and happiness. I came to this conclusion by the way the person is jumping with one arm behind them.

 SPAIN. Madrid. 1933.
This image is slightly comedic, than the last, as the person in the foreground is almost the same as the chalk(i assume) drawing in the background this could be a spare of the moment photograph or the drawing could have been done purely for the photo if the picture is a random happening then it is an extremely rare and unlikely chance. 

SPAIN. Barcelona. Barrio Chino. 1933.
This final photograph is interesting as the man in the suit seems like he is so out of place as he is dressed in a full suit even with a top hat! and all the people around him seem like they are poorer than the man in the suit.

I chose to use a mid long shot on a black background for the character shots to make editing easier. I had me raise my hand as the pose would look better and more fluid in the final poster.

ORIGINAL PICTURE

I chose to use this picture as I am not looking at the camera or out into space. This is good as it shows the character is individual to the rest and doesnt obey conventions.

ADJUSTED IMAGE

I used quite a few different adjustments on this image to make the character not look so pale. I mainly used the vibrance adjustment to do this i also used the curves adjustment on the RGB setting to darken the lighter colours slightly.

FRAMED IMAGE

This is the final framed image I think it is not the best image i took since it lacks in some areas (editing, depth of field)

My planned intention for this series of pictures is for the "activists'" character on the final poster. I wanted them to be part of the group of characters in the middle of the poster, I also wanted the "activist" to be looking away from the point where the rest are as it shows they are a separate character. 

I wanted use either the 1st, 3rd or the 4th as they portray the character how I want. I didn't choose picture 1 and the final image as the character has there eyes shut.

ORIGINAL PICTURE

Here is the unedited version on the image I chose to use. This is img_2597 on the contact sheet. I chose this image as it is the best looking in the series.

ADJUSTED IMAGE

For the photoshop adjustment i used were the curves on the RGB setting to try and brighten the darker areas whilst keeping the lighter areas the same i feel this wasn't as effective as it could of been. I also used the "vibrance" adjustment to make the character have a slightly tanned look as the character is sporty they would spend time out side and more than likely have some colour on there face instead of being pale.

FRAMED IMAGE

I feel that the final image is a vast improvement on the original. I also think the resolution is good as it is quite high at 2916x2376. I think the lighting is suitable for what the image is being used for but if I was using it for another purpose I would probably want to light it differently as it would have a different purpose.

blog post 2 case study 1

I chose to write about Gregory Crewdson.

Greg was born in the USA, Brooklyn. he attended john dewey high school and graduated early.

As a teenager he was part of a band called the The Speedies their song, "Let Me Take Your Photo" influenced his career path. In the 19080's Greg studied photography at SUNY purchase. He received his master in fine arts from Yale university.

He taught at many universities including Yale university. He was also the subject for the film Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters.

Crewdson is represented by Gagosian Gallery worldwide and by White Cube Gallery in London.

The atmosphere in this picture is moody and dark as there is only a few lights on, and there is only a few people visible this could be to show a mysterious setting and to show the small town has a hidden secret. The fact that only one car has left any trails is mysterious as it would take quite along time to build up.

The atmosphere in this picture is quite dark as there is only 5 light sources which produce a small amount of light each the main light source is the ambient lighting. The reason i think that Gregory Crewdson wanted the picture to have a dark atmosphere is to portray the emotions of the woman, I came to this conclusion by by seeing the emotion on her and the rose petals that are on the ground could be representing that she has lost her love..

This looks as if someone is either trying to bury something or is trying dig something up, if its the former the question is what is he trying to get at, but if its the latter the question is what is he trying to hide and from who? The way he is looking at the suitcase in-front of him and how his hands are imply that its the former, that he is trying to get at something.

Narrative photography

Narrative photography is the concept that a picture is staged and is taken to tell a story or an idea.  

Early history of Staged photography

Staged photography is image taken when a performance is done infront of the camera. it embraces the
studio portraiture and scenarios manipulated by the photographer.

The concept was done by the rich women who would by cameras to get rid of time, the reason it would
 only be the rich women doing this is because the cameras are going to be too expensive for the poorer women to buy and the women would hire actors to pose for the stills.

This was started around the same time as photography was popularised in the 1980s through the works
Cindy Sherman and Jeff Wall. Staged photos of classical and biblical inspired photographer 

Self Portrait as a Drowned Man, 1840

This image in its own right is unique as at the time having any skin showing that wasn't face or arms
was blasphemy at the time. The image is also showing a man whom has drowned which would show
the emotion that would be sadness.
